Coriole Winery

My my Independent Project this semester I chose to redesign the branding for Coriole Winery in McLaren Vale. This winery prides itself on its family history and the location of their vineyards. I chose to design labels for three of their best red wines, which would be for sale only at the cellar door. The design is based upon the tasting notes of each variety, and each bottle features a full bottle wrap-around cover.

Imagination with Tory and Timmy

Imagination with Tory and Timmy is a children's picture book that follows the adventures of two mischievous twins. The pair are playing with their favourite teddy bear before bedtime, when suddenly, the bear grows incredibly large and picks the twins up. He carries Tory and Timmy into a new world, where they encounter many crazy creatures.

This project has been a year in the making, with many stages including: character development, storyboarding, final illustrations and text placement. I have included the character design process on this blog previously, which you can view here and hereThis post is showing the final narrative, displayed as flat spreads.

Northern Lights

This is my second piece that I have chosen to reconsider for my portfolio. Again, I have chosen this piece because I wanted to showcase a book cover in my portfolio. In 2012, we were required to chose an existing novel and illustrate the cover sleeve for the story. I chose Northern Lights, a teenage fantasy novel where Lyra sets off to discover her prophesied destiny and save her missing friend. I chose to illustrate the dangerous armoured bear that Lyra befriends, as his character is distinctive in the trilogy and would be recognisable for the readers.

As with the editorial piece, I was unhappy with the finish of the final illustrations, and so have rendered the final image in a more professional way. I have also wanted to experiment with hand drawn type and felt this cover was a good opportunity.

Outsmarting Mortality

For Uni in 2012, we were required to undertake an editorial illustration from an existing magazine. I chose to use Outsmarting Mortality from Scientific American Mind. This article discusses how intelligence is linked to better health and longevity of life. The factors considered are mental illness, education, diet, exercise and general lifestyle choices. I chose to present this discussion by portraying a flourishing group of sunflowers sprouting large, healthy brains. This represents intelligence as growth and good health. To contrast this my inset illustration is of a 'root-man', showing an 'unhealthy' looking figure who is not sprouting flowers, but trapped in the dirty underground.

This year I have been trying to improve upon my old work, where I have chosen two old assignments to reconsider for my portfolio. This was my first choice, as I would like to show an editorial piece in my portfolio.

I felt that the execution of the illustrations in the 2012 version fell short and I wanted to better them.

Personal Identity and Business Cards

For Uni we have been developing our own personal identity in the form of a logo and business card. My logo is a simplified version of my signature, where it will be easy for me to either sign or apply this mark onto images, forms and print material. For my business cards I wanted to crate a template that could be modified easily with new colours and images; for now I have two different options to chose from.

Tory and Timmy Character Design

These are my character design sheets for the twins, Tory and Timmy. These designs show the twins in different poses and with different facial expressions to portray the personality of the characters. I am currently in the process of developing a children's picture book where the twins go for an adventure in an imaginary land. I'll be posting more about this as I complete the work!

Here are some more illustrations from early 2012, completed for a university project on media and technique. We were required to present different subjects using a range of media, including: coloured pencil, collage, ink and lino carving.

Still Life in Acrylic Paint

Here is a series of paintings from early 2012, using the same composition to explore colour combinations and tonal values. This still life consists of an eggplant, tomato and egg. The first painting shows a monochromatic colour scale, only looking at the tonal values of the objects. The next is harmonious, using the cool colours of blue, green and yellow. The complementary painting is using the opposite colours of purple and yellow; and finally the last painting is using a limited colour palate.

Character Development for Tory and Timmy

Tory and Timmy are two twins who love to play with their favourite teddy bear. Every night they imagine a new world to explore. Here, the twins are sitting with their new giant teddy bear. This concept will eventually be a children's picture book.

The 12 Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas is a concept for a humorous children's picture book based on the popular Christmas song of the same name. This page details three of Santa's elves attempting to capture the seven swans.

And, yes. The elves have chubby bottoms.
